Timing Question

Quick timing question for you guys.  I adjusted my timing last night using
what I've seen referred to as the Mike K. method (warm up, pull TPS w/ it
still running, adjust, plug TPS back in).  My question, is it possible to
just adjust the timing by turning the dist. w/o having the car on?  I marked
my previous timing mark on the dist., so I could turn it back to that mark
(which was about 17 D) w/o going through the procedure?
