Sounds like your MAF isn't working. If I unplug mine, the engine sputters
and dies like you describe. Look for loose connections to the MAF, or
possibly a cracked/broken hose in the intake. If you have a melted cat, it
was most likely caused by a stuck injector or bad ignition component dumping
raw fuel and air into the exhaust. If your problem was EGR, the engine
woouldn't idle, but it should run ok with the throttle open. Generally O2
sensors degrade slowly over time. You should smell raw fuel from the exhaust
and/or see black smoke.
