They might do that up here... one suburb of Vancouver, Richmond, has a huge
riceboy population, and the cops will ticket anything, or even dish out
demerits if
they're feeling nasty. I was talking to a friend of a friend who is a
motorcycle cop out there, and he said that according to traffic laws in
Canada, ANYTHING non-stock done to the tail lights is an offense. Even you
have clear tails with red bulbs and proper side markers and signals, they
can ticket you $86 Canadian (or approx. $0.15 USD) for tampering with safety
equipment or something like that.

Interestingly, they also have the power to declare any non-stock muffler
illegal, even if it is compliance with noise and emissions standards. That
cool 5Zigen DTM muffler I had on my Primera in Japan would be illegal here
for about 5 reasons, including the fact that you aren't allowed to have a
muffler that points upwards in any way. I don't think they would ticket a
non-ricey car if you're driving within the speed limits, though... I
wouldn't know.
