Wade,

I'm glad your son is OK, but I'm sorry your car got totalled. If it were
mine I would definitely pull all the aftermarket parts I could off of it,
but wheels and suspension will be tough when it comes to getting it hauled
away. I don't think you'll likely get any trouble from your insurance
company (I've never dealt with USAA, though - I'm on State Farm) but if you
want to keep the parts you may be best off agreeing to a salvage value and
keeping it, then stripping everything you want. I dealt with something
similar when my dad died in 2005. He had had a minor off-road excursion
shortly before he died and the car appeared to be largely OK, until I
discovered that the transmission case was cracked. State Farm totalled it,
and I pulled off a few of the easy things - JWT ECU, strut bar - before
they towed it away. I would have loved to keep the wheels but obviously
couldn't.
