I'll jump in here.

I had a similar problem years ago and I think Grover pointed me to a message to
help me out. I found that the car runs rich when cold started (duh) and I was
just starting it an moving it around in the driveway. I hadn't driven it any
distance in 3 months and was moving it to mow or get other cars around in the
garage. I had the same symptoms as the initial post. After moving the car 4
times and never letting it run more than 30 seconds, it would not start. It
reminded me of a flooded carb'd car (strong unburnt smell at the exhaust etc.)
My solution was to change the oil and check the other fluids then get fresh gas
and drive the crap out of it for 50 miles. Also check the temperature sensor
but that would typically cause the car to run rich after it was warm.
