Ignition wiring question.

I'm trying to iron out two last things before I order my new engine 
management. You can read about the progress here:

I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what the resistor shown in the 
FSM is for. Here is the picture:

Does anyone know what it's use is? Someone thinks it might be used to 
detect misfires. My electrical engineer friend is also not confident as 
to what it could be. Apparently many other SR20 engines don't have them.
Any thoughts?
