Dowel Pins On Block, Transmission

There are two of them.  Which half they stick in, or you place them in is
not important.  So long as they're both in there when it's reassembled.

As you guessed, it's VERY IMPORTANT to have them in there.  The bolts alone
don't align accurately enough.  I installed a junkyard tranny once, and was
missing one or both dowels, and it busted a disk on short order.  I imagine
it take a toll on the input shaft bearings, and crank mains too.
