Hello?  Ignition timing and a Ghetto Box aircleaner don't cost anything if
you have zip ties and/or bailing wire already in your garage.  OTOH, the
ignition timing mod may or may not work on DIS ignitions; I don't have
one, and never played with one, so I don't know.

Somebody said synthetic oil; this is a great start.  Synthetic gear oil
and synthetic diff lube can also have an effect, though I don't know how
much in smaller drivetrains (versus US drivegear, like 9" Ford diffs and
Borg-Warner T56 transmissions).  There are lots of things you can do with
replacement or replacement-spec parts (a tuneup, a muffler, better tires,
better brake pads, and so on), but Mike Jez is mostly right.

There are cheapskate mods that you *can* do to your car, but without a
dyno and a VERY good set of gauges and sensors, there's nothing that's
free *and* reliable.
