You can get all the innards of the alternator piece by piece.  Find a local
auto electrical shop - one which specializes in rebuilding alts, starters
etc.  I was able to buy replacement brushes, regulator, diode pack and
bearings for my '92 Classic's alternator.

Sure is cheaper than buying a new one!
