Well, I don't think there is any reason you could not do that. I
would wager that the people who had problems again didn't replace
some other part either, which should have been.

The reason I would replace both the hub & sleeve is to replace the hub:
they come as a pair, you cannot buy just the one. The hub is pressed
onto the input shaft and should not be re-used once removed. You
probably could re-use it, but it'll be loose (and often is already
when you go to remove it). That may not be *that* bad of a thing
since it is captive in there, but I'd replace it.

The hub & sleeve used to be available separately... most likely when
Nissan found out about 5th gear popout and issued the altered input
gear, they also noticed that dealerships were taking a shortcut and not
replacing the hub & sleeve as a matched pair, so combined the parts.
