I had the pulleys off 3 alternators in the last month.  I do not remember
either one having any play in the main shaft.  Two of these alts. had bad
bearings, BTW.  If the pulley were to locate the shaft axially, shouldn't
there be some sort of bearing on the outside of the shaft to keep the pulley
and alternator body from grinding themselves into oblivion?   There is not.
Is there any play with the pulley on?  Probably.
I'll bet you have bad bearings on your alternator.  That is what happened to
mine, but the power output loss was actually due to bad regulators.
