That is entirely possible.  Easy way to tell that is by where the
pedal is when the clutch grabs.  If the pedal grabs very high it
may not be engaging.  If it grabs low it shouldn't be slipping but
you may not be able to get the car into gear.

If its grabbing at the top add some slack via the adustment screw
on the cable and try again.
