Nope.  Folks used to use the goo before HS began supplying the copper
gasket.  Goo is no longer necessary.

No.  It is simply a metal gasket.  Looks strange, but it works.  Metal
gaskets are not that uncommon as it turns out.  I used to work at a metal
gasket plant (industrial seals).  Just follow the directions and it's best
to retorque the fasteners after a while.  That is critical.
