He's right about tweaking the SPL readings.  I'd take readings from 6'
away from the tailpipe, but at a 45* angle from it.  This would put you
close enough to get more than ambient sound levels, but not hammer the
mic on the SPL meter.

As for why your cabin sounds like a deisel locomotive, I haven't the
foggiest.  Seems to me that there are standards in some racing
types/classes that have a unified method for measuring sound levels,
too.  You may want to look at this harder.
