More important:  how to avoid breaking it in the first place -- or after
fixing it!

Disconnect the bottom end of the cable FIRST!  Crawl under the dash on the
driver's side, locate the bottom end of the cable.  One snap clip holds it
down.  Remove that and pop it off its air control lever.  Now when you take
off the center panel, the cable can easily pull all the way out, still
attached to the center control.

Apparently a lot of folks had trouble with this.  There was a TSB on how to
do it.  And the previous owner of my NX [that dicked with the stereo a lot]
made an elaborate mod to the center panel to allow the cable to be
disconnected up there.
